Before we begin, we need to explain some important information about seagrass and seagrass rugs.

What is Seagrass?

Seagrass is a type of marine plant that grows in shallow, salty water. Seagrasses are found in every ocean on Earth, from the cold waters of the Arctic to the warm waters of the tropics.

There are more than 60 species of seagrass, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some seagrasses have long, ribbon-like leaves, while others have short, round leaves.

Seagrasses can be found growing alone or in huge meadows that cover acres of ocean floor. Seagrasses are an important part of the marine ecosystem. They provide food and shelter for a variety of animals, including fish, turtles, and crabs.

How is Seagrass Different Than Sisal or Jute?

Seagrass rugs are often mistaken for sisal or jute rugs. While they may look similar, there are actually some big differences between the three types of rugs.

First, the salt in seawater gives seagrass a natural coating that makes it resistant to water, spills, and dyes. More resistant that jute or sial rugs.

Secondly, seagrass rugs cant be dyed due to the shell of the seagrass fiber. This leaves only its natural tones as color options.

Another main difference between seagrass and other natural fiber rugs is the way it feels underfoot. Seagrass is softer and more pliable than sisal or jute, so it’s more comfortable to walk on. It also has a more casual look.

Pros & Cons of Natural Seagrass Rugs

Pros:

  • Eco friendly
  • Durability
  • Stain resistant

This rug is made with natural seagrass fibers, which can feel a bit rough and knobbly. Some people might not find it comfortable to walk, stand, or lie on, but others might actually enjoy the sensation.

Chairish is a resale site selling lightly used home decor items. Chairish is a great place to find gently used furniture and home decor, mostly from designers. You can score amazing deals on unique pieces you might not find anywhere else.

The idea behind Chairish is great. Their business model allows for less manufacturing of rugs by finding new homes for lightly used items (the ultimate recycle).

However, there are a few flaws that we found frustrating for some past users.

1. The shipping services used by Chairish. Some past sellers experienced that the products they have sold and sent but were canceled with no notices sent to them. For this reason, many sellers handle shipping themselves.

2. Logistics fees. When buying, past customers have experienced seeing “logistics” fees. Which is a little confusing seeing as they also take a commission from every item sold on the site.

3. Another flaw deals with the buyer side. Many past buyers have experienced slow movement on the buyer’s end. Chairish does not allow for seller reviews (like Etsy does) so at times, you have no details on the reputation and responsiveness of the seller.

That being said, this rug specifically is a wonderful, handmade seagrass rug and should be on your radar if you’re looking for an authentic, handmade option.

They don’t have the same reputation as other brands for high quality, although they do offer a wide variety of high-quality rugs.

Seagrass Rugs FAQs

What Rooms are Best for Seagrass Area Rugs?

Seagrass rugs are a great way to add a natural element to your home. They’re also durable and easy to care for, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. But which rooms are best for seagrass rugs?

1. Living room: A seagrass rug can help define your living space and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

2. Bedroom: Seagrass rugs are great for bedrooms because they’re soft and comfortable underfoot.

3. Dining room: A seagrass rug can help anchor your dining table and make the space feel more formal

Can You Vacuum a Seagrass Rug?

You can vacuum a seagrass rug, but it’s not recommended. The vacuum can damage the delicate seagrass fibers of the rug and cause it to fray. If you must vacuum, use the lowest setting and be very careful. A better option is to shake the rug out or use a handheld vacuum.

Can Seagrass Rugs Get Wet?

Seagrass rugs are great for areas that see a lot of foot traffic or are prone to spills, since they’re surprisingly resistant to water damage. However, that doesn’t mean they’re impervious to water – if you leave a seagrass rug soaking wet, it will eventually start to deteriorate.

To keep your seagrass rug in good condition, be sure to blot up any spills as soon as they happen, and avoid leaving the rug wet for extended periods of time.

Are Seagrass Rugs Easy to Clean?

Seagrass rugs are pretty low-maintenance. The hard, natural vegetable fibers don’t attract dust, and bacteria can’t penetrate the fibers. Sand and fine dirt don’t damage seagrass rugs like they do conventional rugs; the soil filters through the weave, rather than sitting on top.

Are Seagrass Rugs Soft?

They can be! Some people find them quite comfortable to walk on. However, they’re not as soft as, say, a wool rug.

Although seagrass rugs are made from plant fibers, they aren’t simply long strands of grass woven together. The fibers are twisted into strands that are then woven into a rug that feels similar to a very soft, smooth rope.

Can Seagrass Rugs Be Used Outdoors?

Seagrass area rugs can technically be used outdoors, but it’s not recommended. They’ll start to break down and rot if they’re constantly exposed to the elements. If you must use a seagrass rug outdoors, try to keep it in a sheltered area where it won’t be rained on or snowed on and out of direct sunlight.

How Long Do Seagrass Rugs Last?

There is no definitive answer, as it depends on a number of factors, such as how often the rug is used and how well it is cared for. Generally speaking, however, seagrass rugs can last for many years if they are properly maintained.

To help prolong the life of your seagrass rug, be sure to vacuum it regularly and spot clean any spills or stains immediately. You should also avoid placing the rug in direct sunlight, as this can cause the color to fade over time.
