Understanding The Difference Between Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs

While the term “Persian rug” is often used interchangeably with “Oriental rug,” it is important to recognize that there are subtle differences between the two types of rugs. Oriental Rugs, as defined above, are those that are hand-knotted in Asia. This includes the famous Turkish and Indian styles. Persian Rugs, on the other hand, are typically made by an intricate weaving process and usually feature more elaborate designs.

Oriental Rugs

Oriental carpets are generally from Asia. This includes countries such as Afghanistan, China, Iran, Iraq, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. China is an emerging country for carpet manufacturing and is the top exporting country in the world.

In recent years, the Chinese have made their carpet-weaving process more accessible and affordable to consumers worldwide. This has allowed them to sell these carpets to customers throughout the globe.

Oriental rugs are made from wool, silk, or other fibers. Many have a patterned design that has cultural or religious significance. Many include animals, birds, plants, or geometric shapes.

Most rugs feature multiple colors on their surface, along with a wide range of designs and textures that create 3-D depth. These effects were used to draw the eye and capture the viewer’s attention. Attention to detail is what makes oriental rugs valuable. It takes many hours of hard work to create each rug.

Persian Rugs

A Persian rug is a carpet hand-knotted in Iran. They are popular due to their unique attributes and prevalence. Persian rugs are generally placed in their own category under the umbrella of oriental rugs

Like all oriental rugs, Persian rugs are hand-made by skilled artisans.

Persian rug designs often incorporate a repeating floral or geometric pattern that repeats over the rug. They also often include circular or oval patterns in the center, usually in a geometric shape.

Rugs woven using the Persian Knot feature asymmetrical knotting, which allows it to form unique patterns and designs.

Persian rugs have a complex weave, excellent craftsmanship, and high knot count, with rugs having as many as 500 knots per square inch.

What About Turkish Rugs?

Turkish rugs also fall under the umbrella or oriental rugs but differ from Persian rugs by the design and knots. Turkish rugs use double loops, instead of single loops seen on Persian Rugs.

Most Persian rugs have a rounded, oriental, elegant design and usually have a medallion at the center. However, Turkish rugs are often made with straight, clear, geometric designs that portray tribal meanings.

Are Oriental Rugs in Style?

Oriental rugs are still popular today. There are so many styles, textures, and designs that one could decorate their home with.
The designs of this type of area rug have also evolved, and they complement modern, classic, and traditional palettes.

Using oriental rugs in your interior design is a great way to bring your interior into the modern era. They can be used to give you a new feel, and they can make your home unique.

You can use these rugs to create a great atmosphere in your home. You can add a splash of color to your interior design with them.

They can be used to create a beautiful focal point. And they can be used as a neutral space to compliment your existing decor.

Find a Color Palette with a Turkish, Persian, or Oriental Rug

If you want to find a color palette that’s sure to please, try a Turkish, Persian, or Oriental rug. Oriental rugs are well known for their use of color. What’s great about oriental rugs is that they range so far in terms of colors. Neutral color, bold color, exotic, distressed,  bright reds, you name it.

Select a Turkish rug to find a brightly colored palette. These rugs are known for their use of bright, primary colors, which will create a lively and cheerful room.

If you’re looking for a more subdued palette, try a Persian rug. Persian rugs are often muted in color, but still offer a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Distressed rug color is a popular trend with oriental rugs

With the increased demand for environmentally-friendly products, designers are finding more ways to create them using materials from recycled or upcycled sources. As a result, designers have found that consumers value artisanal craftsmanship, but they’re hesitant to spend their money on expensive items they are only going to throw away. This is where distressed rugs tend to shine. They’re often overdyed, thinned out, dried, and used – rather than being thrown away.

There are certain processes that artisans use to make distressed oriental rugs. This is not to be mistaken with manufactured distressed rugs that can often be replicated with synthetic fibers. An area rug made to look like vintage can be reproduced by manufacturers. However, the rugs are not the same quality as handmade rugs.

Orientals Area Rugs & Different Styles of Furniture Can Mix Well Together

If you are looking for a rug that will add a unique touch to your living space, consider pairing it with different types of furniture. For example, try pairing a Persian rug with a sleek wood desk or a Turkish rug with a traditional chair.

The best way to get the most out of your rug is to match it with furniture that works well together.

Traditionally, these rugs are very colorful. In fact, red and purple dominate the modern version. Because of this, it’s better to opt for a neutral color palette with your furniture.

White paint, beige accents, and dark wood cabinetry can be the perfect accompaniment to a red-based rug and a few well-placed colorful vases. It’s a great combination of textures and styles.

Color schemes can be used to make a room more appealing, and they do not necessarily have to be based on a specific color palette. Instead, you can create a style with a particular color scheme by mixing and matching colors from different sources.

If orange is a predominant hue, think about repeating it on lamps, table decor, and wall paintings/decor. The result will lend the room a unifying impression, even if your chairs don’t match the couch and the couch doesn’t match the rug.

Mix With Complimentary Patterns & Embrace Texture

Mixing patterns with Oriental, Turkish, and Persian rugs is encouraged. But, if mixing patterns is your intent, then be sure to break up the individual patterns.

If you have a patterned rug, you should select a solid color upholstery fabric. When adding pillows, opt for a solid color and patterns. However, if artwork is a must, bold pieces work well.

In conclusion, Oriental rugs are a staple of any home decorating space. They add warmth, style, and comfort to a room. With the numerous styles, sizes, and colors available, it is worth researching the different options. The best thing to do when buying an Oriental rug is to make sure that you buy one that is of high quality and that will last for many years to come. We hope this information helps you find the perfect rug for your home decor and interior design
